Each year until 2014 parts of the Health Care Law goes into effect. The donut hole for seniors who purchase prescription medications has decreased, free preventive...CLICK TITLE FOR MORE... screenings for those on Medicare have become available and other benefits are in place. This year there will be more. Among them are the following;
1. Accountable Care Organizations(ACOs) will be available on a limited basis(beginning 1/1/12) as demonstration projects prior to being universally available.The ACOs will charge a flat fee for Medicare patients and the ACO will provide all services for that single fee. This will replace fee for service for those people whop participate and also for those providers who are part of those ACOs.
2.Value based purchasing will begin on 10/1/12.  Hospital payments will be tied to performance standards. Hospital care is the most expensive part of the Medicare system and also more generally of the entire health care insurance system
3. Beginning 10/1/12 there will be a financial penalty for hospitals when they re-admit patients for avoidable complications
4. By 12/31/12 States have to certify that they will be ready by 1/1/14 to go forward with the organization of health insurance exchanges. If not ,then the Federal government will take over those entities in States not ready. This will be the mechanism by which each individual will choose the health insurance which they will use. The exchanges will have a listing of available health care insurance in that State for each person to choose.
