Report on Overmedication of Nursing Home Residents- 5/11/11

The Inspector General of the Depart. of Health & Human Services reported this week that some nursing home residents are inappropriatly receivng anti-psychotic medications. The study.....FOR MORE CLICK TITLE.. .  found that:

 

  • Institutions failed to comply with federal regs to prevent overmedication.
  • At times these medications were prescribed ror uses not approved by the Food & Drug Admin and not accepted for Medicare coverage.
  • 88 % of the time medications were prescribed for residents with demantia and that may face them with an increased risk of death.
  • Some drug companies aggressively market to this population.
  • A little more than half of the antipsychotic drug claimsfor which Medicare paid should not have ben covered because the claims were not used for medically accepted reasons or not properly documented.
  • Nursing homes diespensed medications to one in five residents in ways which violated the government's standards for their use.
